Thoughts and Encouragements:
“In intercessory prayer, we pray for others. If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than is within our power to give them,” says Richard Foster (Prayer, HarperSan Francisco, 1992).
Intercession is a priestly task. All who have believed and placed their trust in Christ have been made a royal priesthood. Intercessory prayer is not only an act of love but also an essential part of the Christian calling.
There are several key aspects to keep in mind when talking about intercessory prayer. First and foremost, an intercessor must have a close and personal relationship with God. This relationship is essential because the intercessor needs to be able to hear God’s voice. Foster emphasizes that “hearing God is the first, second, and third thing necessary for successful intercession” (Celebration of Discipline, HarperSan Francisco, 1988).
Additionally, an intercessor must be persistent and not easily discouraged, as answers to prayers sometimes take a long time. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells the story of a widow who was granted justice because of her persistence. Through this example, Jesus connects persistence with faith, which is crucial in intercessory prayer.
Another important aspect of intercessory prayer is the proper understanding of the phrase “in Jesus’ name.” In the Gospel of John, Jesus says: “Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now, you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” (John 16:23-24).
To pray in Jesus’ name means to pray with a full understanding of His work of redemption. If Jesus had not come into the world and given Himself as the atoning sacrifice in our place, prayer would neither be possible nor effective. Jesus now sits at the right hand of the Father as the High Priest, who has once and for all performed the perfect act of mediation, reconciling us to God. Because of Him, we can now come before God and bring others before Him in intercessory prayer.
Prayer Points:
Let us pray that God strengthens all those called to intercessory prayer, giving them clarity in hearing His voice and perseverance in prayer.
Let us pray that more people recognize the importance of intercessory prayer and that a new generation of prayer warriors rises in our communities.
